DATE: April 14, 2005

SUBJECT: Notice of Vehicle Impoundment

Beginning June 1, 2005, Haltom City Police Officers will begin impounding vehicles if the motorist cannot provide proof of financial responsibility. State law mandates a person may not operate a motor vehicle in this state unless financial responsibility is established for that vehicle (Transportation Code 601.051).

Officers will exhaust all reasonable means to determine financial responsibility exists before a vehicle is impounded. If coverage cannot be determined the motorist will be issued a citation, and the vehicle will be impounded. Motorists will not be permitted to park their vehicle in lieu of impoundment, as there is no way to determine whether the vehicle is insured prior to being driven away.

If a vehicle is impounded, the owner will be responsible for all towing and storage fees and must present proof of current financial responsibility prior to the vehicle being released.

Motorists who operate a vehicle without the required insurance pose a substantial risk to other motorists. A family or citizen involved in an accident with an uninsured motorist can be devastated by things such as repair bills, loss of work, medical expenses and attorney fees, while the uninsured motorist simply receives a citation, leaving the citizen to seek civil remedies. By impounding uninsured vehicles, we can at least ensure the motorist has obtained the proper financial responsibility prior to the release of the vehicle.

I saw something about that on Fox 4, also the fake State inspec. stickers that's popping up. The impounding part is long overdue.

The way the new registration stickers look, I bet there are some fakes in the works already! I think the new tags look cheap!
