A buddy of mine started talking to me about this today. I knew of it, but I did not realize that it is somewhat of a big thing for Texas folks. There are kart racing tracks and organizations. Anyone here ever get involved in this type of racing?

The link above is long, but it is a in-kart camera view of a race at the Denton track.

I hate to generalize on this, but it seems somewhat affordable racing (in comparison to full-out road racing or drag racing with a fully built car).

It seems like $5,000 gets you a real nice setup for a mid range shifter kart, with most parts being pretty affordable...

I have thought long and hard about getting involved in this. My son would enjoy it with me (he's 10). I honestly think it would take more than $5k, but I guess its just like anything else...anything can become a money pit.

I have two good friends who used to race shifter karts competitively. They moved up to SCCA, etc. Their biggest caution was that if you get competitive and serious, you _will_ get hurt. Busted feet/ankles...even if you're a good driver, stuff happens if you do it long enough.

I came close to doing this as well. $5,000 would be a good start. Instead of getting into this I bought a dirtbike instead and started cross country racing and Motocrossing.

I had my pro karting license for many years, raced endurance carts at Pocono and Atlanta motor speedway against the Andretti's many many moons ago. Much safer than bikes, rarely is anyone injured seriously.

For that kind of money you could get one hell of a nice dirt track car and beat the sh!t out of it and others! :D :evil

Karting would be SO MUCH EFFING FUN!!! :d I'd LOVE to do this.

I'm wondering if a frame can be designed to prtect the feet/legs better... hmmm...
