Memory question

I have heard that your RAM space is the restriction in your computer. Also I run XP and I hear that takes 128mb to operate. My laptop is a 2.4G P4Mobile I have 512ram now. Will I notice a significant differnence uprading to 786 or 1024mb? I run a lot of apps at one time and would like to speed it up. On a daily basis I run XP of course, virus scan daily takes about an hour, burning SCT's takes about 6 minutes, printing various items. RAM isn't prices too bad 256 is about 64 bucks, and 512 is 84 bucks. Next my laptop has PC2100 can I use PC2700 or does it have to be the 2100?

Thanks for the simple and direct help Doug. I am looking at my Perf page while doing normal tasks. My PF usage is staying around 350mb for the most part. What concerned me is the CPU usage is very high it was near 80-100% for a while what does that mean? It has been over 84% for 5 minutes now the PF is steady at 345 static.. Wow that means the new laptop I bought for tuning which only had 256mb was really choked down..
