Never heard of that cal, I am sure it will be nice. Why not run the convetional cals for deer? 270, maybe a 308 etc. I assume the magnums are overkill 30-06, 300 win mag, 7mag etc..

the 7mm-08 is very similar to the 308. but with better trajectory.

The 7mm-08 is a conventional deer caliber. It's a .308 case necked down to take a 7mm (.284") bullet, so a little flatter shooting than a .308. Plenty of energy for deer and elk, but with a reputation for light recoil and minimal muzzle blast. I thought pretty hard about a .270, but finally settled on the 7mm-08 for the short action. The ballistics of the .270 weren't enough different to warrant the long action.

Hmm, interesting. Brad has a few buddys down in Houston that hunt poor little Texas deer with 300 WinMags... He wants a super mag as well, shame on him...

I hunt east texas deer with my .223....works perfect and doesn't do near as much damage to the meat. Just have to be confident with yoru shot placement.

i hunt texas dear with a 30-378 weatherby mag. maybe alittle overkill but i never have to chase one down:icon_mrgreen:

Ammo is readily available, loaded by all the major manufactures. No more expensive than any other comparable centerfire ammo. Typical bullet weights range from 120-175 grains.

If you were going with an efficient short-action round, just curious why you didn't choose the .300 or 7mm RSAUM?

One write-up by the American Rifleman found when shooting an Armalite AR-10(T) in .300 RSAUM that "while the .308 Win. has a nominal muzzle velocity of around 2620 f.p.s. with a 180-gr. bullet, the .300 RSAUM can push the same projectile to 3000 f.p.s., yielding about 200 f.p.s. more velocity, at 1,000 yds., with significantly less drop and wind deflection. The .300 RSAUM’s flatter trajectory also allows the use of scopes with a smaller range of adjustment."

Yes, I've found that the .30-'06 and .300 Win. Mag can be overkill for whitetail.

You answered your own question. They're both overkill for anything I'd likely shoot. Don't plan to hunt anything bigger than elk and the 7mm-08 is plenty powerful for elk. So, why pay for the more expensive ammo, and put up with the recoil and muzzle blast?

Bump. Still looking to sell this rifle. Price with scope is still $925, but without scope/mounts/rings I'd go $650.
