View Full Version : 95 Engine Upgrade

Sixpipes

Starting a little project on my 95 since we are all but done with Ronny's truck. I will be replacing the heads, upgrading the torque converter and transmission valve body, adding a ported lower and doing a general clean up of the engine bay. Probably won't be ready for Lightningfest, but who knows. Oh yeah, probably will be doing a drop also.

And quite a distinctive look it is I might add...

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/enginea.JPG

Here's a shot of the engine so far. I got hardened Trick Flow pushrods (8.6") as everyone said, but they seem too long to me. According to the Trick Flow information, an 8.6" pushrod is what I need when replacing stock GT40 heads and using the stock cam configuration with a 95 motor. There are not enough threads showing to lock the roller rockers down on all the cylinders. I'll have to do more research, but something doesn't appear right to me.

Sixpipes

Yeah. I think the correct pushrods are 8.0". The 8.6" hardened pushrods are what Trick Flow says I should need, but they don't work. I have some hardened Comp Cam Magnums in right now and I think they are going to work fine. I get everything adjusted and installed on Saturday.

I got the valve/pushrod thing figured out and adjusted. Got clearance problems with the valve covers and the GT-40 upper intake, but I'm working on that (may go 1.5 inches on the phenolic spacer. Need to change the oil pan out, but other than that, it is ready to put back in. Next weekend will be messing with the exhaust and transmission and engine bay clean up. I should have it done a week before LFest.

Lookin' good Dennis. What size spacer are you currently running? I could be wrong, but I think a 1" spacer should work with the taller valve covers. Double check that with the guys over on NLOC.

I wouldn't go any taller(spacer) than you absolutely have to, because you are effectively increasing the runner length of an already "long runner" style manifold. The longer the runner, the better low end response you'll have(with your combo, you should already have plenty), but it will limit the engine's ability to build power in the upper revs, especially with the factory cam.

For example, my motor has comparable heads to yours, a 10.25:1 compression ratio, and a small roller cam(212*/216* @ .050 and .530 lift(Int./Exh.)), and with a only 1/2" spacer, she STILL runs out of breath by 5400 rpm.

You may have been well aware of this. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

:D Oh yes, I forgot about that EGR fitting on the underside of the GT 40 intake. I had to take that fitting and keep filing it down until I could pass a feeler gauge under it after I tightened down the upper. I have that piece in the shop if you want me to mail it out to you. Let me know. The motor and intake and headers look great! Very nice job indeed! So are you still planning to give Ronnie a Gen 1 escort, along with Tobbun, to Lightning Fest 2006?

I guess I would feel guilty getting all comfortable in my Gen II with my fellow Gen I-ers bouncing down the road so yeah, right now, if the Gen I is ready, I will probably take it. Regarding clearance with the emmissions connection; I'm thinking I can plug both ports without causing any issues, but we'll see what the guys on NLOC say.

http://www.nloc.net/vbforum/showthread.php?p=1187741#post1187741

And Rob, you are right, the only reason I am using the spacer is because it is necessary to clear the valve covers. Not going to be an issue when I add the KB this winter, so it is just a temporary problem. :tu:

Hey Dennis, if my memory serves me correctly, those two ports connect to an EGR vavle on the back of the lower intake. So I would think that you could plug those two ports but you would need a vacuum source for that EGR valve. It has been a while so I could be totally wrong on that but check it out.
I remember that I only had to modify the back port and not the front one for some reason. So.... maybe that front port could be you vacuum source.:D

Well, here's the deal... I could have the truck running fine by the time we leave for LFest on Thursday (Sept. 21). Had every intention of starting back with it today, but changed my mind on what I am going to do. So I'll be taking Go_rila to his 4th LightningFest this year.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/gettin_into_my_work.JPG

Got up this morning and decided I wanted to change cams in the motor; this after I had all the valves set etc... with the Trick Flow heads. Junior comes back from Houston this morning with a set of DJM drop axles. All of a sudden I start thinking that I don't want to be putting in a suspension this winter along with a KB blower etc... you get the idea. I also don't want to put a nice clean motor into a dirty engine bay. Once you get started, it is really hard to find a stopping place so to make a long story short, Wimpy is going to be in the garage until I get the suspension, transmission (valve body), converter, KB, 42# injectors, and all the support functions in place. After doing Ronny's truck, I've decided I want something that looks like that so I'll be going over everything (basically disassembling the truck) cleaning, repainting, and getting it ready for a nice paint job in the spring. Already have the color scheme and wheels picked out... So the project goes on. :D

I have a cool trick to get the Charcoal filter out of the engine bay if you want to do that. It helps to clean up the motor well. I am also relocating the "coffee can."

I have a nice custom grind SD cam I bought from a guy in Arizona (flat tappet) that I will probably be installing. The specs are:

Hydraulic Flat Tappet
Adv. Duration: 255/269
Intake Lift: .480
Exhaust Lift: .488

Duration @ .050 lift: 212/218
Lobe Separation: 114*

I still haven't decided mass air or tweecer, but the more I read about mass air conversions, the more concerns I have about going that route. I am relocating the coffee can either to the bumper or behind the passenger front fender. Interested in ther charcoal canister thing, but I'm on no hurry at this point.

Well, certainly there have been some twists and turns since I started this thread back in August. Ronny and I are just finishing up the transplant of my 95 shortblock into his 93 BROK3N truck. This is a picture of it from last weekend; repainted and ready to be installed.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/Engine_bling.JPG

I had decided to build up his 94 roller block, but...I came across this deal and couldn't pass it up. The 351W "Sportsman" shortblock is no longer offered by Ford Racing, but I found a brand new one and will be picking it up next week in Dallas. I provided a link to an article written in 1998 on the motor. Wish I could have gotten it for the 1998 listed price, but I think I still got a deal. No way I could have come close to having Ronny's 94 roller built for the same $$$ as I paid for this motor. So this is much more of an engine upgrade than I had planned originally. Funny how things work sometimes, heh? knana

I don't know what was special about a Gen 1 from the factory, but most of the ones I know don't have many factory parts left in them:cool:

If I ever do a Gen 1, I'll just start with a tube frame or a 3 or 4 year old Nascar Truck, available cheap.;)

I think POPEYE has underdrive pullies, B&M shift kit, and Bassani exhaust. WIMPY was 100% stock until I started this engine upgrade thing. A stock Gen I is a great bracket racer, but not much fun going 15+ seconds in the 1/4 IMO.

I'm definitely going KB with 42# injectors and tweecer. I know the motor is strong enough to add a big shot N2O set up (150/300), but I am really only looking for a 50/75 shot for cooling since there is no intercooler system available for the Gen I/KB. The KB for the Gen I trucks is nowhere as effective as the KB for the Gen II. Haven't really figured it out yet, but you would think the Gen I KB could produce more than the 8# boost number the guys on NLOC are seeing.

Pretty lo-tech stuff. Primarily various wires wheels w/power drill, putty knife/scraper, wire brushes, various degreasers, copious numbers of rags, and mineral spirits for wiping everthing down before painting. I'm still working on it, but am done with about everything except the underside of the engine crossmember. Primed almost everything in the engine bay today.

It takes a lot of time and it is really nasty work. I typically do an hour or so at a time before I get dirty enough to want to quit. After working on Ronny's truck, I'm not going to be satisfied until mine is in that kind of shape.

I was thinking that you used a gallon or more of the orange degreaser stuff, then took at leat 8 hours of scrubbing, scraping, etc.. then a huge rinse, then a couple more hours of time.. then do another rinse.... then a huge wipedown with brakecleaner.. then comes the spraycans..

how close am I on the time spent on this? also, were you solo or did you have assistance?

Ideally, I would have had the wheels on the truck and moved it outside for a high-pressure wash to knock off all the junk and then the job would have been a lot easier. Ronny has helped a little bit, but mostly I just work on it when I feel like it. I'll get some help putting the engine in, but I hadn't planned on having it ready for paint until April or May anyway so I have time. Right now I am doing the frame to behind the cab and then after that will wait until the truck is running before I take the bed off and do the rear suspension and clean up the rear end of the truck. I have the paint scheme and the wheels already in my head and will be doing some interior changes as well. Goal is to have another two-tone Gen I ready for LFest 07.

Well, as you can see, there is quite a bit of overspray, but there was not a spec of rust/dirt on the frame before I primed and painted it all. Probably will put a tranny cooler with new lines and relocate the carbon canister line per Flats Man's suggestion. Mostly I just have to start with the assembly process which is really the fun part.

Long tubes si... I made that decision when I decided to go with the Moroso oil pan. The stock cat section won't work so I don't need the shorties. Just put them on for the picture. :D

It looks very nice as usual, like the satin finish on the frame and springs, but is that some overspray on the front disk?;)

Sixpipes

The calipers are black and there may be some overspray, but I'm a long way from getting the hubs cleaned up. Just really getting all the stuff adjacent to the engine bay ready before moving on to the motor install. Fun to start hanging stuff back on the truck, finally.

I like that too and would love to have my undercarriage look that nice, but I really kind of need that asphalt stuff up here on my truck..

Decided to pull the engine wiring harness and clean it up ....

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/harness.JPG

along with the driver's side core support (just for done/undone comparison).

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/front.JPG

Also measured the pushrod length and came up with an ideal length of 7.75 inches. Found some Comp Cam ones that were 7.781 so I ordered those instead of ordering a custom length pushrod.

Is that wiring harness 11 years old? if so, any thought to replacing it with a new one?

The wiring harness is 12 years old, but in great shape. Just a little cleanup required. Sometimes old stuff can be cleaned up to look pretty good. :D

I think it is a recessive gene triggered by age, older=more anal, but you need the gene first.:tex

Any updates Dennis?

Still trying to find a 12-inch snout for my KB2200 before I set the motor in, but should be soon. Decided to put Hooker long tubes on since I can't wait for Pickrel to get back into production. Rerouting a few lines, but since I have my Gen II about where I want it, I can start putting more time into the Gen I project.

OK, so 2 1/2 years ago I pulled the stock motor from my 95 and this weekend, I start back with the SVO shortblock. Why I waited until summer is beyond me.

As I was saying....ready to go in, but the mast on the engine hoist was too short. So I rigged a comealong to pull the motor up a bit more until it fit over the core support.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DSCN7737.JPG

And in the vicinity of the right place. Can't find the engine/transmission bolts so to the Ford house I go tomorrow.

Visibly absent is pretty close. I needed to get my Gen I truck project going again and now since the little woman has officially retired, I'm going to need a hobby that gets me away from the "projects" that are going to start materializing around the house. If you know what I mean. :icon_mrgreen: So you might find me more visibly present in the near future.
