View Full Version : Beginning of Turbo Install

I am setting up the fuel system right now and started by removing the front tank and sumping the rear. The rear tank will still have the stock pickup and intank 255L/hr pump with a 255 L/Hr frame rail for everyday driving. When I go racing, the front tank selector will turn on the Weldon 2025A and that will feed the turbo under boost. Here is the tank after it was sumped with two #12 AN ports.

Here is the view of the tank flipped upside down!
http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/MVC-003F5.JPG

In order to make sure we can return enough fuel with the big pump, I installed a #8 Russell bulk head fitting for the return fuel.
http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/MVC-004F3.JPG

Finally, the tank is installed with the return line capped for right now. Hopefully this is the last time to drop this tank!

The restraining straps are to prevent the Rancho Bars from hitting our lift. I am fabricating some straps for this next week!

Dang... somehow I missed your post. So the turbo fuel system is redundant and you can still operate the rear tank on the stock system if you want? Have you solved the fuel bleedback problem with the front tank? After rereading, it sounds like you've decided to pull the front tank completely so now you have a 15 gallon tank fuel capacity, total (rear tank only).

Yep, how many times am I going to have to stop for fuel on the way the Kansas City!? I am saving the front tank so that I can reinstall it later and operate the Race system off of a seperate switch for the pump!

So why aren't you using the Go_dzila approach and putting a separate racing fuel tank in the bed??

Flats Man
02-19-2006, 09:01 PM
Well the fuel system in Go_dzila is like an aircraft fuel system and it is pretty tricky for an Old Fart like me. I thought I would build something that an Old Guy couldn't screw up so I planned just one tank. Most of my racing and driving with this truck will be local and I actually plan to trailer it out to Kansas.

So there will be at least three Gen 1s trailered to Kansas next year:twitch:

Hey Rob, I promised you that I would get a dyno with the box and the GT 40 lower and I did that today! My initial timing was set at 5 degrees so we changed that to 15 degrees and we got 313 RWHP and 353 torque! Sixpipes guessed the rwhp almost right on the button! the fuel air was a flat line at 12 to 1 but that is not surprising since the meter was set up for a blower. When we increased the timing, it leaned it out 1 point. I am running about a 9 to 1 compression and I think it will take more timing but I am going to take the GT 40 off tomorrow and install the Edelbrock and elbow. I have a turbo cam that should be here any day now and that will be changed when I change out the intake. It is feeling and driving real good with the extra timing in there!

Hey Fred, any updates?

Flats Man
04-01-2006, 10:24 AM
Well, I don't have too much progress to report! I am being held up by waiting on a set of Bassani Equal Length Headers! The Story follows: When I got back to Fl, I noticed that I was missing the right side header which happens to be a equal length Bassani. I am beginning to think that I never got it in my kit, that I picked up used, from a guy named Blitzkreig, in Tomball, Tex. Anyway, I called the guy up and he said that he had another set that he would sell me and some other misc stuff. We agreed on $250 and I sent an extra $50 for any shipping cost. That was on Jan 30. I can't get hold of the guy and he doesn't returm my phone calls or emails. I haven't seen the Headers either! In all my dealings on trucks, this might be the first time I have been burned on a deal! Anyway, got tired of waiting on the Bassani's so I bought a new set and they arrived Fed Ex yesterday. I now have all the stuff to start the install and will try to get started next week if possible. Thanks for your interest!

It is funny how things happen sometimes. After waiting for nearly two months for my headers, and after buying some new ones that just arrived a few days ago, I get an email last night that my headers will be shipped soon! Go figure! I already have the used set sold when they arrive so it will all work out, I guess.

Hey Fred, man I completely missed this thread somehow. Those baseline numbers are pretty good naturally aspirated numbers, especially considering that the motor is set-up for forced induction(low compression ratio, box style upper etc...). If that motor were set up with more compression, and a longer runner intake to promote better low and mid-range torque in Naturally Aspirated trim, it would have probably spit out another 20-30 HP and 30-40 LB/ft of TQ.

It does make me feel a little better about my numbers, as I was hoping for around 315-320 RWHP. As you know we played hell getting mine tuned, but we finally got her done. She wound up spitting out 307 RWHP and 357 RWTQ. I ran a string of 8.60's out at Kennedale a couple months back, which should place her pretty solidly in the mid 13's. Not too bad for the lil' 351.

Keep us posted on the build-up. I'll be monitoring this thread a little more closely in the future. That thing is gonna be absolutely SICK with the turbos when you get her all tuned up!:tu:

I got the intake and lower off yesterday! I found out why the old motor made such good HP too. The Lower had a lot of porting work on it and was actually much better than the extrude honed lower that I had bought for Tobbuns's truck. So, I guess the Sixer will be getting the honed lower in exchange for his stock unit. Tobbun will be getting the ported lower for his truck. I found that the Rockers were self clearancing on the Trick Flow valve covers so I will be taking care of that in the next few days. At least I know where the clicking is coming from! lol I will try to get some pictures in a few days!
That is the latest from Florida!

Just an update on the turbo set up. I really want the most attention paid to Ronnie's truck because it is so special. I am installing the fuel system to feed the turbo right now. It is almost complete as of today but I still have to build a bracket for the Weldon pump and then finish the hook up from the sumped tank to the first Weldon Filter and then the 2035A Weldon pump and the secondary filter and the 10 AN line up to the Nitrous Y and on to the motor! The Street fuel system will be an intank 255 goiung through the stock fuel filter to a frame rail 255 and on to the nitrous Y. There is an 1 inch fuel check valve in the race system and a 3/4 inch check valve in the street system, to keep the fuel pressure going in the right direction. I have installed a # 8 An return that handles the fuel for both systems. Right now, I am planning to drive this thing to Kansas City. Since I have changed from a T 68 turbo to a Pt 76 Gtsh, I have to build a new hot section for the turbo. That will be done at our Sister Shop! I should be able to meet you Guys at Lightning Fest 2006! I plan to leave Florida on Wednesday and arrive on Thursday! See you there!
If I were Tobbun, I would be real worried about winning Wild Gen 1 this year with that new Green and Black truck in the running!

I got the bumper and Air Dam installed but the innercooler was so big that I had to trim about 1 inch off the back of the air vents to make it fit properly.

We are building a custom wiring harness for the truck because there are many circuits that we no longer will use. After stripping out all the unwanted circuits, this is what was left.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/MVC-015F1.JPG

I will be making some of these circuits longer and some shorter. The MAF is going to be a blow-through on the passenger side so that has to be lengthened.

After stripping out the unwated circuits, this is what went into the trash can.

I should make it to Lightning Fest! The only bad part coming up is that I have done every thing that I can do and now must depend on others. Right now, I need the connector pipe made up between the two headers and I need the down pipe and the innercooler pipes fabricated. I may not have time to fabricate the exhaust so, For Lightning Fest, I may just dump it infront of the left front tire. A light tune will follow.:D

Thanks Wes, I didn't like putting that 90 right after the pump but I wanted to keep the big #10 line out of the tire wash on the right side and also wanted to keep the fuel line inside the frame rail. Anyway, with a 2035 Weldon, it isn't going to run out of fuel! lol

I wouldn't be too concerned about the 90^ fitting. Those things flow a _lot_. The entire set up doesn't look too much different than what I had on my '90 Mustang (with the exception being that there were lots more ready-made setups for the Fox Mustangs compared to what you had to completely fab from scratch). I bought an old Cervinis hood for the Gen 1 that did not have provisions for a spring bar to pop the hood up when the latch is pulled. I noticed that on Tobbun's truck, he had a Cervinis with a spring bar. Cervinis installed a metal plate in the later hoods to prevent stressing the fiberglass with the spring bar. I fabbed up a piece of 1/8th inch aluminum and traced the pattern from Tobbun's truck. I finished it yesterday and will finally be installing the Hood tomorrow. Here is what it looks like. The hood is upside down and the front is at the bottom of the picture!

I like that piece for the hood. The one I just put on my truck is the older version I guess, kinda of like yours with no spring. Plus it shows cracks around the latch area. Since my factory hood already has some rot in some areas, I was thinking about cutting out the latch area and riveting it to the fiberglass hood.

Hey Chris, I ran into a little problem today that could effect you with the mod to your Cervinis hood. The good news is that there is an easy fix for it. I will take some pictures tomorrow and make a post about it. The hood is on and everything is working perfect. When the hood release is pulled, the hood pops up off the spring bar. What was the mod you said you had to do? It looks good on there. Mine has a flutter at high speed, not sure if its due to the latch area cracking or what. I really don't want to put pins in there, so if reinforcing it with the stock latch plate doesn't work, I think I'm going to use a couple dzus fasteners on it.

Flats Man
11-01-2006, 06:52 AM
Chris, that spring bar will take a lot of flutter out of the hood. My truck had been hit a few times up front so in order to get the hood to fit this good, I took it to a body shop and they readjusted the front fenders. There is a lot of work installing this and adjusting all the latches. Get the spring bar in there and next time out to Texas, bring it over and we will spend some time on it.

Flats Man
11-01-2006, 10:09 PM
Chris, this is where the spring bar ended up. With the 1/8th inch aluminum, if the bar is mounted in the stock position on the outside of the hood, it is too strong and makes closing the hood difficult. Here is what it looks like finished.
http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DSC02062.JPG

Here is the left mounting point for the Mustang prop rod. In order to clear the hood in the closed position, the rod had to be moved out over the radiator. Looks like I have some paint work to do huh?

Flats Man

Hey Chris,
That is 1/8th inch aluminum plate. You may be able to find some at Home Depot. Just trace the pattern off the underside of a stock lightning hood our your stock hood and then lay it out on the plate. If you put a little grease on your finger, you can put washers on the back side of the rivits using the two holes that are in the plate. That way the rivits will not pull through the fiberglass. There isn't much of a load on it anyway! lol You can use your current spring bar or you can get one from Ford for about $15. If you want to trace the pattern off of Tobbun's truck, just let us know! Good luck!
PS There are two spring bars from Ford. The one I have is the wide heavier one and the one on Tobbun's Truck is the narrow one. Both seem to work fine.

It is a two stage controller that I can set on any boost level I want. Probably 7 lbs on stage 1 and 14 on stage two. My main engine managment system that I am using right now is FEAR!:burnout:

Judging from you saying you have 2 chip, do you have a pro-m mass air conversion or something similar?

Flats Man

Yes, I have the Pro-M with a Blow through meter and 60 lb injectors. We have all the SCT tuning soft wear for the truck and will be running a chip on the stock computer to control shift points and a chip on the engine managment computer. I think that is going to work but we don't know for sure yet. I will let you know how it turns out. I am installing the boost controler today.:D

For those that may have an interest in Turbos, here is the boost controller that I finished installing today! It will be pretty slick because I can run around town with 7 lbs selected, hit the race fuel system button and flip the toggle and I am good for 14 lbs instead of 7. Here are a few pictures.

I started this thread about two years ago with the build of my Turbo Gen 1. I thought I would bring this thread back because I am finally continuing on this project and there have been some changes in plans.
First, I have had the truck up and running with the Turbo using a chip for engine managment and another chip for the transmission computer. The truck was running at idle and we were just beginning the tuning process of hooking every thing up when the truck backfired and quit running. It would not restart so we pulled the distributor cap off and the rotor was not turning as we hit the starter. To make a real long story short, I had a cast distributor gear running a billet cam! It came out from Texas that way and I had about 2000 miles on the motor. I parked the truck in the back of my shop for about 6 months and finally got the motor out of it about a month ago! We tore the motor down and found metal shavings all through the motor including the mains and cam bearings. The Crank and Cam, pistons and cylinders were OK. So, the motor is at the builders place and I had to make the decision as to what I wanted to do about that Stock block as the other parts of the motor could easily exceed the HP rating of that block. So this is where the story picks back up. I ordered a Sportsman 4 bolt main block for a 3 inch Crank. Turns out they have discontinued that block and only offer it for a 2.75 crank. Not wanting to turn the crank down to 2.75, I am now looking at a Dart block for that motor. Sorry for the length of this post but I had to cover a lot of time span here. I will keep this thread updated with the continued progress on the truck. :tu:

I am taking the E4OD over to my guy to have him just make a check of it before it goes back into the truck! We will pull it all apart and check all the internals and maybe change the case on it! I will let you know what we find inside the case! It has about 2000 miles on it also! it should be good to go but we will find out tomorrow! I think we may have found the 4 bolt dart Block that we have been looking for! More later:icon_mrgreen:

This is an interesting read. I wasn't around when it was started but seems like a pretty interesting build. Keep us updated. :tu:

I had some surprises today on the transmission. First the good stuff.
1. I got the High Performance Overdrive clutches that I paid for.
2. I got the after market Center support.
3. I had the 6 pinion Forward Planetary
4. And the intermediate Sprag was updated.

Now the bad stuff, keep in mind that were talking about a Performance rebuild that has around 2000 miles on it.
1. The Pump is scored and has to be replaced.
2. The pump bushing is worn and needs to be replaced.
3. Burnt pressure plate and forward clutch drum should have been
replaced but were reused with new clutches.
4. Forward clutches=stock
5. Second Gear=stock clutches (not a bad thing but I ordered Racing)
6. Third Gear and Reverse=stock clutches( same as above)
7. Reinstalled burnt pressure plate top and bottom for second gear.
8. None of the shaft bushings on this 148,000 mile tranny were replaced.

Almost all of the problems with this rebuild can be traced back to one thing! Failure to replace the brass bushings with new ones. The old bushings allowed to much play and wobble of the shafts cause the scoring on the pump, wear on the Sprag and wear on the Center Support. This tranny would not have lived very long with the HP that is going to get thrown at it!

So, inconclusion, I am rebuilding my motor because a $75 dollar steel gear wasn't installed on the distributor when the billet cam was installed. And I am rebuilding my transmission because some $35. bushing weren't installed. Other than that, i have had a pretty good day!

More later!:d

I forgot to list the new parts that are going back into the rebuild.
1. Overhaul Kit
2. Intermediate Servo
3. New High Performance Pump (replaces the stock one that I got)
4. Bushing Kit
5. Filter
6. Forward Pressure Plate
7. Second Gear Top and Bottom Pressure Plate
8. Boost Valve
9. One Piece Case Bushing
10. Low Race and Reverse Sprag
11. New Center Support
12. Washer kit
13. Upgrade to newer solinoid block

Chris! What is the latest on your truck! Did you ever put that blower on it or did you sell the kit? What kind of times are you running? Also, did you fix that aluminum plate for the spring bar on your Cervinis hood? I have been a little out of touch with everyone for about a year or two. I got side tracked on another project and that is finished now!

It looks like I will be buying another case for my rebuild! The case that I had was warped enough so that you could slip a feeler gauge under a straight edge across the valve body portion of the tranny. That is why we found two gaskets instead of one under the valve body! I have another E4OD case and hopefully it will spec out!

I did fix my hood. Its not as pretty as yours, but it does work, and the hood doesn't go up much to show off anyway (and holds down solid with no wobble at speed). I ended up selling the supercharger and other parts, needed money worse than a fast truck at the time. I did change the catback, and it has a small dry shot on it now. Oh and I added a snugtop hard cover and roll pan.

Well our trucks are going to look fairly similar. I have a White ARE bed cover and a roll pan and I am going to be installing the three inch drop beams, shackles and Hangers in mine. I am having a real hard time finding a 4 bolt Sportsman block with 3 inch crank journals since they stop making that crank a while back! Well, I can't find a 4 bolt block with 3 inch crank journals!!!! I also can't turn the crank down to 2.75 because of thrust issues and a few other issues! I have a very nice internal ballanced crank and I don't want to go buy a new 2.75 crank, so it looks like I will have to use the block that I had before! I will just have to keep the boost down lower so that I don't make too much HP! Is that stupid or what! lol I don't know what this Country is coming to when a guy can't find a 4 bolt SBF block with 3 inch journals!
The transmission is all done and sitting back on the transmission jack ready to go back in when the motor is done! I ended up putting $800. worth of parts back into it and that included a new case to replace the warped one. That is the latest!

I have tried to find NOS blocks in inventory but no luck yet! I will call Summit and see if they have one sitting on a shelf in the back room somewhere! lol I would buy a seasoned block if I could find one! All my rotating assembly is balanced to zero so I am reluctant to start replacing cranks and rods, pistons and flex plates. :nono:

Well the motor is being picked up on Wednesday! We found more problems in the heads! My heads were purchased new from Fox Lake and was the second pair that I had purchased from these same Guys. I don't know if any of you have had dealings with Fox Lake but they are very particular about the valve springs that go into their heads. I bought my TFS High Ports assembled with nothing but the best valves and springs installed! Like I said, they are very picky about what brand of springs and what kind of springs go on their products...................Now the rest of the story! My short block has been put back together and my builder was going through his head check process before he installed the heads. I got a call yesterday and he told me that the valve springs were S--T! He said that he could almost push them down with his pinky finger. These springs supposedly did not have much more than 2000 miles on them and they are just cheap weak springs. He also said that they were weaker than a factory stock spring! I will let you draw your own conclusions as to what happened to my springs. Boosted motors don't run very good with weak springs in the heads! I bought a new springs along with new retainers and they are arriving tomorrow!

The Valve springs and keepers came in today! I had to go pick up a 10 AN fitting to weld to the oil pan for the turbo! Hopefully I will pick up the long block tomorrow or Friday at the latest! After that, it will all be in my hands until tuning begins.
I am pretty sure that the intake valves were blowing open under boost with my truck! As long as I kept the boost around 2-3 psi, it would accelerate but if I but my foot in it, it was like blowing the candles out on a Birthday Cake! The truck would just die! This truck had real strong springs in the waste gate and it was not releiving boost. It would go to 16 lbs in a heart beat! At that point, I think the intakes were open on all the cylinders! Not good!

More problems with the heads! I am going to have to give Fox Lake a call on this one! As we began to replace the valve springs it was noticed that the spring height was all over the place! New shims were added to adjust for this but some of the barrels had to be machined out to come with in specs. Also, the porting was not much more than 1+, certainly not the Stage Three that I paid for. I am going back through my records for the numbers on these heads and will give Fox Lake a call and see if these numbers match their records! The heads and valve look new but this is not like my last set of modular heads that I got from Fox Lake for sure! I am going to be married to this Gen 1 for a long time! lol :d

Those E4OD's are a beast! It takes two pretty strong guys to lift this thing up onto the transmission jack! I am planning to drop the tranny in this weekend! I bought a new SFI flex plate and had it balanced to zero with the crank assembly and installed that about 1 Month ago! Where does the time fly? I did not like the way the power steering bracket and the alternator bracket looked so I took them off and Painted them today and reinstalled them. I also got the center latch support installed and need to adjust that to the hood position. I also installed the tranny clooler and the lines and ran them back to where the transmission will be installed. I did get this picture of the back side of the radiator core support and it shows how clean the "look" is.

Tomorrow is the day we breath life into this thing again! Completely rebuilt motor and transmission. All the fluids are in and I charged the battery and turn the battery switch on and bumped the starter. It turned over!:d We are going to bring the oil pressure up on the motor by going through the distributor and then set the timing and she should start and idle! Keep your fingers crossed!

Well, yesterday, when we pre-oiled it, we found a minor oil leak and fixed that. Then we applied fuel pressure and found a small fuel leak and fixed that! As soon as we got the timing set properly, she fired up! Gotta put some miles on it and shake out some bugs that are probably still in it but the tuning process will begin before long!
This is what we are going to tune the truck with! Check it out.

I pulled the Computer out of the truck yesterday and took it over to the Speed Shop that is doing the tuning! The chip opening has to be cut back just a little bit and a few parts bent down but it will fit back into my Pro-M Mass Air Case.

I am bringing my Son's truck out here in October to do some work on it and will be changing his injectors and using a Quarter Horse on his Speed Density set up! I am planning on putting some Aluminum Heads on it and putting it into the 12's. :d

Well, last week we started the truck and found the MAF meter pegged at 5 volts for some reason. I was using an old Pro-M univer blow through meter. rather than screw around trying to fix this meter, I will be using a SCT BA 5000 Slot style MAF Sensor! Here is the link for it! http://dagostinoracing.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=15017

This piece just came in today and we will have to Fab up a 3 1/2 inch aluminum pipe to install it in. I will take a picture of the finished piece before I install it! This piece will make real nice with the 1/4 Horse Tuning system. It is a 5 wire system and I already had a plug for a Mafia set up and the plug is the same for this device! I should have the MAF fabricated this next week! That is the latest!

how big was the tube it came in ?

the MAF is designed to work in a specific size tube ....

Air passing the wire cools the wire , complicated math extrapolates to the total volume of air passing the sensor based on know tube volume .. blah blah blah

Got it covered Doug! You are right, you can't put this in any size tube with out knowing all the numbers for this device in a certain size of tube. The Slotted Meter comes with a card that gives all the readings from 2.5 inches to, I believe, 4 inches of tube. I could post up the card if your interested or send it to you in an email. Hey Steve,
When are you going to be here? We will try to get together and visit the shop! I haven't worked on my truck for about two months as it has been a very busy Fall! SCT sent me a new Slotted Meter and found that I had fried the first one. We are checking the wiring from Pin to Pin this next week before I put the new meter in! Not fun popping new meters at about $250 each! As soon as I check the ground, hot, and signal in and signal out wiring, I will put the new meter in and try it again! Thanks for the interest! :d

Here is the latest on the Turbo Gen 1. We finally sorted out the wiring problems and got the Computer responding to the Quarter Horse tuning. The Truck starts right up and runs like a champ and the idle is perfect. We were seting up the timing and pulled the spout plug and set initial at 10 degrees BTDC, Put the spout plug back in and noticed no change in the timing. Increased the RPM and still no change in the timing so apparently the Computer is not controling the timing. Monday, I will replace the Spout Module and see if that changes anything and then replace the computer and see if that works! Just posting up so that you have an update. I am very close to having this thing on the dyno as soon as I solve the spout plug issue! Anyone have any ideas?
I have reassembled the front of the truck and had the front bumper repainted and installed Crystal head lites and corners. It looks pretty sharp and I will try to get some pictures of it on Monday!

Finally some progress on the tune! We had the truck running like a champ on the Quarter Horse and then saved that file and loaded it into a SCT Super Chip. I installed the chip and was back to square one! The truck would not stay running. We then loaded the file into a chip from Quarter Horse and bingo! We were setting the timing and pulled the spout plug and set 10 degrees initial and when we reinstalled the spout, no change in timing! We increased the rpm and still no change in timing so I have another issue that I am tracking down. Has anyone seen this before? I have changed the spout module to no avail. It is a good thing that this is just a hobby or I would be going nuts with this project! lol
Also, we discovered that the O2 sensors need to be replaced, which is not surprising considering all the charcoal that I have blown past them on the many tune attempts over the past year! :d

New O2 Sensor and oil Change done a few days ago. I dropped the rear tank and replaced the intake pump with a new 255 L/Hr pump. I put the License plate on it and drove it to the gas station and filled it up with 93. When I got back to the shop, I put the original computer back in the truck and that fixed the spout plug problem that I was having! So, I just have to set the timing and take it to the dyno! Hopefully I will have some numbers soon! :d knana

Well I went to the Dyno today and we made our first full run in the late afternoon. The first run blew off an intercooler hose but I have the video of that in my album. I had 10 degrees initial timing and we ran 13 lbs of boost to 6000 RPM. 650.7 RWHP and very close to 650 on Torque with a fat F/A of 10.8 at the top. We will refine that tune next week and go to maybe 15 lbs of boost but I am very happy with those numbers.

OK. Here is a little story about why turbo trucks scare me....

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/6056/medium/442P9243006.JPG

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/6056/medium/442P9242963.JPG

This truck has a big-block turbo setup and is from the second Lightningfest in Topeka, KS. I got matched up against him in the True Street event we had that Saturday AM. Check out his drag radials.

My 99 had 20" street tires on.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/6056/medium/442P9243008.JPG

Needless to say when we launched, the Gen I leaped out of the hole ahead of me and steadily pulled away to mid track...where his rears broke loose as the boost and horsepower continued to build. He then commenced to fishtail all the way to the finish where he tripped the lights at 11.00 sec ET. It was so scary that I backed off the gas expecting him to come into my lane at some point...or worse. The guy never backed off the gas and I talked to him after the run about his little ride; no big deal to him apparently, but it scared the crap out of me just watching.

My point is; turbo power is so smooth and so subtle (subtul as pronounced in Southern Oklahoma) that the rears can break loose even at high speeds and you may not know it until it is too late to catch. See also Frank's little fender bender in his turbo truck at Lightningfest V.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/6138/medium/2007-09-22_15-47-14DSC_4478.jpg

So I asked Flatsman the question because no way would I have the guts to do it....on the street at least. :evil

Flats Man
07-24-2010, 03:54 PM
Well, the insanity continues! I had Eibach drop springs in this truck and decided to put drop beams on it. I put the stock springs back on the truck and took some pictures of the front with the 255-60-15's on it. I also measured the height of the air dam from the floor and came up with 9 1/2 inches for the stock height. So far I have pulled the right I-beam off the truck and will be putting in all new ball joints and tie-rod joints, new bearings, rotors and pads. I have painted the beams, spindle, torsion bar mount, etc and will assemble the right side the first of this next week. :D

The right side I-Beam installation is finished now. The install is pretty straight forward but cleaning and painting the parts is what takes time. I had new upper and lower ball joints press in and had the Rotors turned. I knocked out the wheel bearings and races and installed new ones and also installed new brake pads. The radius bars got new bushings as well.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DSC02498.JPG

The sway bar links were too close to the tie rod and the coil springs so I unbolted the bar and reinstalled it on the outside of the pan instead of the inside. The sway bar will be at about the angle that it is in the picture. Then I will get Ford part # F81Z-5K483-BB and use that part to link up to the sway bar perch at the base of the coil springs.

http://www.svtgalleries.net/gallery/data/500/medium/DSC02499.JPG

I have the driver's side I-Beam off the truck right now and will do all the same to that side. Should be finished and have it back on its wheels next week.

That is a bit of a long story but here goes. I bought your Gen 11 to originally leave in Dallas for my Son to drive and for me to drive when we visited our Grandkids. My Son got hooked on Gen 1's and the Red and Black came on the market and we bought that one which meant that I needed to sell your Gen 11. I drove your Gen 11 to Florida and was going to put it on the market but a friend of mine wanted it and I sold it to him for the same price you sold it to me. It was agreat looking truck! He kept the truck for about a year and needed more room because they had a Son, and he sold it to a local Guy and I think I see it every now and then. It still looks good and the Guy seems to be taking care of it. Do you want me to try to track it down for you? I had L8 Apex take the higher springs off the back and put the stock ones back on and I really detailed the motor and that was all that I did to your truck. There are times that I wish I still had it but I just have too many vehicles. Thanks for a great truck.
